Not so often that we will see the works of Thai artists in a global event like Venice Biennale. This is the reason why the ‘Krung Thep Bangkok’ exhibition by Somboon Homtienthong is worth mentioning again.
When it comes to Bangkok, what are you think of? Surely the answers differ, especially between the perceptions of foreigners and Thais. While foreigners might think of the Grand Palace or the temple of the Emerald Buddha, Somboon defines Bangkok from familiar everyday objects that have been forgotten like plastic market bags or stacks of chairs. This is his portrait of Bangkok.
Krung Thep Bangkok exhibition, curated by celebrated gallery owner Numthong Sae Tang, was held in 2017 at the Thai Pavilion at Paradiso Gallery, Giardini della Biennale, and was supported by the Office of Contemporary Art and Culture, the Ministry of Culture. And since Venice Biennale is held every two years, it is interesting to see who will be Thailand’s representative this year.
