Pa-Kao-Ma : 100% Thai, Stylishly Global

Forget that old piece of flashy tartan, roughly woven fabric worn in the provincial Thailand for generations. The Pa-Kao-Ma Local Handicraft project, in partnership with LALALOVE fashion design, has reimagined and reintroduced the down-to-earth Pa-Kao-Ma textiles into the Thai, and increasingly international, high-end fashion.

A generally folksy item, Pa-Kao-Ma is an all-purpose piece of fabric that each local possesses at least once in their lifetime. Woven from cotton in a colourful checkered pattern, Pa-Kao-Ma is durable and breathable, perfect for everyday multi-use. This fabric is commonly produced in a rectangular shape and can be employed either as a scarf, shawl, wrap; can be strung up as cradle for a baby and even worn tied around the body to carry weapons into a battle. Pa-Kao-Ma has been part of the Thai folk culture for as long as one can remember.

An internationally acclaimed stylist, fashion designer and founder of LALALOVE, Linda Chareonlap has worked together with local producers around the provinces of Sakon Nakhon, Uthai Thani, Prachuap Khiri Khan and Pathum Thani to create the fashion breakthrough: 100% casual wear from Pa-Kao-Ma.

Bringing the old to the modern, connecting the province to the city, LALALOVE recently launched its new collection - LALALOVE x PAKAOMA, shining the spotlight on these homey and essentially Thai textiles. This collection has also been presented at the Amazon Fashion Week 2017 in Tokyo, Japan on March 20, 2017, where all the top designers and fashion enthusiasts gathered.

Clothings from LALALOVE x PAKAOMA collection play with the fabric pattern, bringing colours and the weaving techniques into the game. Digital printing is also used in to apply quirks to the fabric, with drawings from popular Thai artist Oh Futong. Items in the line include everything from jumpers, t-shirts, leggings, bomber jackets to frill-trimmed skirts, swimsear and casual wears, even where the original woven cotton cloths do not apply. A great chance for the city to touch base with the province, and for the province to reintegrate into the city!
